Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria wants to gain independence in the upcoming years. The statement was made by the self-appointed leader of the separatist region, Evgheny Shevchuk in an interview with Novosti Prednestrovia<\/a> news agency.<\/p>\n

“I believe that in the next one and a half years will be decided upon the international recognition of the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic,” Mr. Shevchuk said. “The Transnistrian nation has created its republic already. Now the question is related to the international recognition.”<\/p>\n

The head of the secessionist region said that South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which are both similar separatist regions, have recognized the “independence of Transnistria.”<\/p>\n

Evgheny Shevchuk argues that his “country” has to take position with regard to the hasty integration of Moldova with Romania, while the actors in charge with the settlement of this conflict have to take some decisions.<\/p>\n

On September 2, the separatist administration will mark “23 years of independence” in the so-called capital of Tiraspol. The event will be honored by the Russian Vice-President, Dmitry Rogozin, who is also Russia’s special envoy for the Transnistrian conflict resolution process.<\/p>\n

A week later, Russian Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, Kirill will pay a visit to the separatist region, too.<\/p>\n

Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on September 2, 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic, this breakaway entity consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the east bank of the Nistru River and the border of Moldova with Ukraine, on a small part of what used to be, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, the historians say.<\/p>\n

\nIn 1992 escalated a conflict between Moldova and Russia over this territory. A cease-fire was signed the same year by president of Russia Boris Yeltsin and president of Moldova Mircea Snegur. An agreement to withdraw all Russian forces from the trans-Nistrian districts of the Republic of Moldova was signed by Moldovan Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli and Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin in 1994.
