During that year, it was surrendered to the Soviet Union under the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact signed secretly between Hitler and Stalin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Bessarabia is a synonym for Moldova and is used to identify present-day region of the Republic of Moldova that still remains incomplete since some northern and southern parts of Bessarabia belong to Ukraine today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">People in the Republic of Moldova speak Romanian, although the Constitution states that &ldquo;Moldovan&rdquo; is the official language of the country. However, linguists maintain that &ldquo;Moldovan&rdquo; is only a dialect spoken by the people residing in Moldova. In schools, the students study in Romanian and their textbooks have &ldquo;Romanian language&rdquo; written on the cover.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Romanian President has always been a strong supporter of the Republic of Moldova. He reiterated that Moldova should be part of Romania again given that the people residing on both banks of the Prut River have a &ldquo;blood relationship.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As a matter of support, President Traian Basescu eased the procedure to grant Romanian citizenship for Moldovan citizens. Hundreds of thousands of citizens of Moldova hold dual citizenship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">However, there are voices in Moldova claiming that Romania interferes in Moldova&rsquo;s state affairs and would prefer a more distant relationship with their Western neighbor, which is member of the European Union since 2007.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Communist MP Grigore Petrenco stated for Moldova.ORG that Romanian President&rsquo;s discourse on unification of Moldova with Romania do not need political commentary but rather have to be &ldquo;analyzed by a psychiatrist.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;Traian Basescu has lost popularity among Romanians and now he cannot do anything else but issue stupid statements,&rdquo; Grigore Petrenco said. &ldquo;Furthermore, his statement shows to what extend the European Union perished having such presidents as Basescu. Every person has the right to an identity; therefore this should not be imposed. When the identity is being imposed this becomes a clear example how European are the Europeans.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Traian Basescu has repeatedly stated that the people residing in Moldova are Romanians. However, he is disappointed that most people claim they are Moldovans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;So far, we know for sure that both Romanians from Serbia, from Moldova and Ukraine can meet in the European Union,&rdquo; Traian Basescu said. &ldquo;We have met already with the Romanians from Hungary. Now I call on the Romanian language speakers from Ukraine to understand that they are Romanians and should identify themselves as Romanians, not as Moldovans.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Romanian President said that there is a strong group in Moldova that seeks unification with Romania. However, parties that promote xenophobia and anti-Romanian sentiments have always been on top.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">He continued: &ldquo;To me, Moldovan means citizen of the Republic of Moldova. But the state of Republic of Moldova is not concerned with the ethnic identification of its citizens.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The head of the Liberal National Party (PNL), Vitalia Pavlicenco told Moldova.ORG that she welcomes Traian Basescu&rsquo;s recent statements. Her party is not represented in the Moldovan Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Basescu made a very direct reference to the anti-Romanian orientation of the governors in Chisinau who do not know what is their identity, who do not have Romanian conscience and do not know what language they speak &ndash; Romanian,&rdquo; Vitalia Pavlicenco said.<\/p>\n<p>She suggests that the &ldquo;denationalized peoples&rdquo; of Moldova has the right to decide &ldquo;without any external interference, especially from Russia, its future, which will be the reunification with Romania.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">People from both Moldova and Romania have started campaigns of collecting signatures to urge the Parliaments of both states to accomplish this desiderate. Teenage movement &ldquo;Action 2012&rdquo; announced in June 2013 that their platform seeks to gather at least 100,000 signatures in support for unification. Until that date, the platform gathered no less than 70,000 signatures and counting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Public survey (CBS-AXA) of 2012 revealed that over 15% of people residing in Moldova would like their country to be part of Romania.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Unification preferences seem to be quite different on the other side of the Prut River. Romanian Centre of Strategic Studies revealed in August 2012 that over 87% of Romanians would like unification with former Bessarabia, today Moldova.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;Romania wants unification with Moldova but the Republic of Moldova does not want it,&rdquo; said Romanian President.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The census of 2004 showed that only 2.2% of Moldovan citizens identified themselves as Romanians, while 75.8% said they are Moldovans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In the recent years, there have been several unionist movements in the largest cities of Moldova and Romania.
