Romanian Foreign Ministry seeks to diminish the consular fees for services provided abroad by their diplomatic missions. According to the Foreign Ministry, a legislative proposal has been drafted in this regard.<\/p>\n

The modification is intended to lower the costs borne by both Romanian and foreign citizens seeking consular assistance or services. The Ministry said in a press release that the move should not discriminate anyone regardless of their citizenship.<\/p>\n

Romanian President Traian Basescu stated last week that his Government should weaken the bureaucracy in the visa application process. Romania complies with the European Union and Schengen standards and asks for 60 Euro for a short-stay visa or transit visa. Moreover, Romania offers lower visa fees for the countries which have a special regime with the EU, the fees ranging between 35 and 70 Euro per application.<\/p>\n

The Republic of Moldova is currently exempted from Romanian visa fees based on a previous agreement signed between the EU and Moldova. However, free visas for Moldovans will be granted until Romania joins the Schengen zone.<\/p>\n

Moldovans are also required to prove they have enough financial means when travelling to the European Union. Therefore, at least 500 Euro have to be shown through a banking account or other means. Romanian president said that 500 Euro is certainly a lot of money for Moldovans and the amount should be diminished. However, the EU legislation does not allow such exceptions.<\/p>\n

As encouragement, the Romanian leadership said the country fully supports Moldova’s European integration process which, once achieved, will lift visa requirements.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
