Joining Russia-led Customs Union will bring to an end the Republic of Moldova’s sovereignty in the area of trade policy.<\/p>\n

“To join the Customs Union, Moldova will have to denounce its other free trade agreements (CEFTA, DCFTA, and FTA with Turkey) and will have to abide to the common trade policy,” said a report<\/a> of Expert-Group, an independent think-tank based in Chisinau.<\/p>\n

The study – whose results were published on Friday – revealed that the Customs Union will have an immediate and negative impact on trading relations with the countries in the respective trade agreements.<\/p>\n

The experts evaluate that if Moldova aligns its trade policy with the Russian standards, the country’s foreign trade will switch from a liberally-oriented to a protectionist policy. This is expected to affect the trade with any country other than with those of the Customs Union.<\/p>\n

The Customs Union, known also as Eurasian Union is a proposed political and economic union between former USSR republics that is due to be established by 2015. It is still a project which will be signed between Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus when all the regulations will be set. The union will ensure a single customs territory.<\/p>\n

Russia has submitted an invitation to Chisinau to join the Customs Union in September last year. However, Moldova rejected the Russian proposal, saying that the country seeks European integration.<\/p>\n

The analysis shows that Moldova’s economic integration with the European Union will keep the country’s freedom to draft its own trade policy without any concessions but which have to be in line with the World Trade Organization membership commitments.<\/p>\n

“Moldova will have the freedom to negotiate an FTA with the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union, or with any other country in the world. This is completely in line with Moldova’s economic objectives and development imperatives,” the experts explained in their report.<\/p>\n

However, the specialists suggest that Moldova should develop a “clean and predictable investment climate,” so that the European investors can bring their capital to Moldova without fear.<\/p>\n

Moldova is expected to initial the Association Agreement with the European Union in November at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius. The Association Agreement includes the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the EU, a project that is expected to liberalize the trade between Moldova and the European Union.<\/p>\n

Germany, EU’s most developed country, is a steady supporter of Moldova’s European integration and hopes that the Association Agreement with the EU will be initialed at the Eastern Partnership Summit.<\/p>\n
