Moldova makes it clear. It will not join the Russia-led Customs Union, also known as the Eurasian Union.<\/p>\n

In a briefing in Chisinau on Thursday, Moldovan Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman made a summary of her activity abroad for the last few weeks.<\/p>\n

Travelling to Moscow a week ago, Natalia Gherman had talks with her Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. She told the Russian officials that the Association Agreement, which Moldova is expected to initial with the European Union in November this year, will not affect the economic relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

“I have explained to my Russian counterpart the provisions of the Free Trade Agreement with the EU,” Natalia Gherman said. “This agreement does not jeopardize the relations with our trading partners. Contrariwise, the Republic of Moldova will become even more attractive for them.”<\/p>\n

However, the Russian Foreign Minister expressed concern<\/a> that the signing of this agreement might endanger their relations. Sergey Lavrov said his country respects the choice the Republic of Moldova has made and its European aspirations, but he expressed interest in “the extent the Agreements signed with EU will affect Moldova’s trading relations with Russia, including the free trade zone with the CIS.”<\/p>\n

Moreover, Ms. Gherman made it clear that the Republic of Moldova will not join the Eurasian Union.<\/p>\n

The Eurasian Union is a proposed political and economic union between former USSR republics which is due to be established by 2015. It is still a project which will be signed between Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus when all the regulations will be set. The union will ensure a single customs territory after the model of the Schengen zone.<\/p>\n
