Ahead of her visit to Moldova on Tuesday, July 9th the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton praised the Eastern European country for its achievements registered so far in relation with the EU.<\/p>\n

“Moldova has demonstrated its commitment to cooperation with the European Union and in Chisinau I will stress our reciprocal commitment to Moldova’s political association and economic integration with the EU,” Ms. Ashton said in a statement.<\/p>\n

She added that there are still challenges which need to be tackled, such as corruption, the Transnistrian conflict and some institutional irregularities.<\/p>\n

“I will also underscore the EU’s support for the on-going political and economic reforms in Moldova, as well as in addressing challenges like stabilizing the institutions of democracy, fighting corruption and moving towards the settlement of the Transnistria-conflict,” the EU Commissioner said.<\/p>\n

In Chisinau, Catherine Ashton will have meetings with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Timofti, Prime Minister, Iurie Leanca, Foreign Minister, Natalia Gherman, the speaker of the Parliament, Igor Corman, as well as some leaders of political parties and factions.<\/p>\n

Her visit takes place ahead of a historic summit that is due to take place in Vilnius in November 2013 where Moldova is expected to initial the Association Agreement with the European Union, including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
