Ukraine wants to open a General Consulate in Moldova’s separatist region of Transnistria, which is an enclave between the two countries. The information was confirmed by the OSCE Special Representative for the Protracted Conflicts, Ambassador Andrii Deshchytsia.<\/p>\n

“I want to confirm that Ukraine is really interested in expanding its consulate presence in the Republic of Moldova,” Andrii Deshchytsia said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine<\/a>. “This question is already on the agenda of Ukraine-Moldova bilateral relations and it is addressed to the Ukrainian nationals who reside in this country, as well as in the Transnistrian region.”<\/p>\n

According to the data of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over 90,000 Ukrainian citizens live on the territory of separatist Transnistria.<\/p>\n

The official stressed that the issue is being negotiated together with the Moldovan counterparts.<\/p>\n

Ukraine is not the only country willing to open a Consulate in Moldova’s secessionist region. Russia has also expressed interest in opening a Consulate in Tiraspol in order to protect the Russian citizens residing in the breakaway region, which is heavily supported by Russia.<\/p>\n

In Russia’s case the Moldovan authorities rejected the idea on opening a Consulate in Transnistria unless it withdraws its military assets from the ground. The Moldovan diplomacy said that in order to open a diplomatic mission there, the constitutional authorities of Chisinau should be able to secure the safety of the diplomatic staff, fact impossible at the moment.<\/p>\n
