Moldovan President, Nicolae Timofti said in a briefing on Wednesday that amid approaching the Vilnius Summit where Moldova is expected to sign some important economic agreements with the European Union, some external actors try to hinder the development of the Moldova-EU relations.<\/p>\n

“There are forces that do not want the Republic of Moldova to integrate in the European Union,” Nicolae Timofti said. “Since we are so close to signing the Association Agreement with the EU, there have emerged some negative actions from certain actors. It can be said that these parties do not believe signing the agreement is what is best for Moldova.”<\/p>\n

The statement follows after the Bulgarian minority in southern part of Moldova – autonomous Gagauz-Yeri – gathered over 5,000 signatures to organize a referendum which would split the region from Moldova.<\/p>\n

“I reckon these developments as another attempt to destabilize the situation in Moldova. The autonomy which the Gagauz people enjoy today is enough in order to benefit from all the rights promoted by the national and international norms. Therefore, all these statements and actions contribute to the destabilization of the situation,” Nicolae Timofti said.<\/p>\n

Similar challenges took place recently in Moldova’s separatist region of Transnistria. Four Moldovan police officers on duty were detained by the separatist militia a few days ago.<\/p>\n

Evgheny Shevchuk, the so-called president of Transnistria issued on June 10 the so-called “Law on state border of Transnistria.” This sparked negative reactions in Chisinau, the Moldovan President saying he will never recognize the “law.”<\/p>\n

“The issue is being always monitored by our state,” Nicolae Timofti said. “I will never recognize the law regarding the border of the Transnistrian region.” <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
