The Council of Europe has expressed concern about the current political situation in Moldova “where a political struggle seems to be in danger of jeopardizing the Moldovan people’s aspirations on the road to European integration.”<\/p>\n

President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon issued a statement on Monday saying the recent laws enacted by the Moldovan Parliament may endanger the democracy since some decisions “have been conducted in great haste,” referring to the change of the electoral system and the status change of the Constitutional Court.<\/p>\n

“I urge all political forces in the country to put their partisan and personal interests to one side and work together for the European future of the country and its citizens,” Mr. Mignon said. The official pointed out that the PACE “is willing to facilitate dialogue between the various political parties, if they so wish.”<\/p>\n

Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland has also reacted to the latest developments in Moldova. He warns that the amendments made last Friday and the way they have been adopted might undermine the functionality and independence of key state institutions.<\/p>\n

“I am following the developments in Moldova with concern. The most recent amendments affecting the Constitutional Court are of particular concern, as the proposed provisions seem to be in contradiction with the Moldovan Constitution, as well as with European standards on constitutional justice,” Mr. Jagland said.<\/p>\n

The official calls upon all political actors to act in a responsible manner, emphasizing that the credibility of Moldova’s European path is at stake.<\/p>\n

Similar concerns were voiced by the Venice Commission<\/a> and the European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Parliament of Moldova adopted in a rush several bills last Friday (May 3). The laws on the Constitutional Court, the electoral system, the functioning of the Government and the functioning of the law-enforcement structures have been changed with the support of the Communist and Liberal-Democrat lawmakers.
