An incident on Friday night &#8211; which turned violent for a short period &#8211; took place in the Security Zone, which is a strip between Moldova and its secessionist region of Transnistria in the East and is protected by a peacekeeping mission consisting of Moldovan, Transnistrian and Russian deployments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After the separatist authorities installed four new illegal checkpoints in Varnita, a village located in Moldova&rsquo;s administrative territory, the residents reacted. They demanded the removal of the checkpoints aimed at prohibiting the free travel of citizens in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Based on the live reporting of Publika TV on the ground, a few hours after the installment dozens of Moldovans, residents of Varnita gathered and tried to remove the checkpoints. However, they were hindered by the separatist militia. Video images show how the people clashed with the self-appointed policemen of Transnistria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The mayor of Varnita village, Alexandr Nichitenco, together with members of the Joint Control Commission (JCC) negotiated with the separatists for the removal of the checkpoints. At this time, all four illegal checkpoints were successfully eliminated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Early in the morning, the JCC summoned members to an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in the region. According to their decision, the other two checkpoints will be safely removed from the ground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Moreover, the JCC calls on international bodies to get involved in identifying a solution to overcome the tensions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;We hope for involvement of the international partners in order to identify solutions to release the tensions in the region,&rdquo; a press release of the JCC reads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mayor Alexandr Nichitenco said that the residents&rsquo; attitude regarding the installment of the checkpoints by the separatists was an appropriate one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;It is not the first time when the residents of Varnita village took action and fought for their rights,&rdquo; Alexandr Nichitenco told Moldova.ORG. &ldquo;The residents were aware that if the checkpoints are not removed now, they will remain there forever.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mr. Nichitenco regrets that the constitutional authorities in Chisinau had a delayed reaction to the crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;Obviously, we awaited more involvement last night from the authorities based in Chisinau. When we saw the member of the Joint Control Commission joining us, we became more courageous, although the residents were expecting more [involvement],&rdquo; the mayor continued.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to him, the people still fear that a similar incident could break out at any time, the threat will not fade away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;The people still fear that the checkpoints will be reinstalled. They are in this situation for 20 years now,&rdquo; Mr. Nichitenco added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The so-called Transnistrian foreign minister, Nina Shtanski, said in a post on Facebook that the checkpoints were established &ldquo;to avert the smuggling of alcohol.&rdquo; She added that unarmed controllers were supposed to operate at the checkpoints.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The President of the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Timofi, told the press on Saturday that the only way to overcome these tensions is for Russia to withdraw their troops from Moldova&rsquo;s separatist region. He explains that only in this way legal power could be installed on the entire territory of Moldova.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;Then we will have peace and order,&rdquo; Nicolae Timofti said. He added that the separatists take advantage of the political crisis in Chisinau and try to destabilize the situation even more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Jennifer Brush, said in a statement on Saturday that she &ldquo;strongly condemns&rdquo; the unilateral actions undertaken by the separatists and urges both sides to abstain from any further actions that could bolster the tensions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&quot;I strongly condemn the incidents that happened last night in the Security Zone and call for the reduction of tensions between the sides. I discourage the Transnistrian side from taking further unilateral actions that could destabilize the situation,&quot; Ambassador Brush said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Moreover, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Ukraine&rsquo;s Foreign Minister, Leonid Kozhara, &ldquo;expressed his concern over recent actions that took place in the Security Zone, affecting calm and stability in the region.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to a press release, Mr. Kozhara called on both Moldova and Transnistria to abstain from any unilateral steps that would increase tensions and cause conflict situations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;I call on the sides to keep order and stability in the Security Zone as factors directly influencing the process of the Transnistrian settlement,&rdquo; the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on September 2, 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic, this breakaway entity consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the east bank of the Nistru River and the border of Moldova with Ukraine, on a small part of what used to be, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In 1992 escalated a conflict between Moldova and Russia over this territory. A cease-fire was signed the same year by president of Russia Boris Yeltsin and president of Moldova Mircea Snegur.
