Bulgarian ethnics in Taraclia County, located in the Southern part of the Republic of Moldova, have sent a letter to the authorities in Chisinau to accept their request to establish a cultural-administrative autonomy in their region. They have also requested to insert Bulgarian as their second official language, after Romanian (“Moldovan”).<\/p>\n

Over 66 % of the residents in Taraclia County are Bulgarians.<\/p>\n

According to the document issued by the Council of Taraclia town on Friday, April 12 and quoted by Regnum<\/a> news agency, the movement seeks to promote “fairness towards the Bulgarian community, preserve interethnic peace and exclude any attempts to violate the integrity or remove the County of Taraclia.”<\/p>\n

The Moldovan Government did not issue a statement regarding the secessionist attempt of the Bulgarians residing in the Southern part of the country.<\/p>\n

Political expert Oazu Nantoi told Moldova.ORG that it is likely that the decision taken by the Council of Taraclia County to have been influenced by the recent visit to the region of the Russian Ambassador to Moldova, Farid Mukhametshin.<\/p>\n
