Tensions between Moldova and its separatist region of Transnistria have arisen. The administration of Bender town, which is located in the Security Zone, has announced the prohibition of the Moldovan policemen to wear uniforms.<\/p>\n

According to their local regulation, as of April 11, the Transnistrian militia will detain any Moldovan policemen wearing uniforms and will take them to the militia station.<\/p>\n

The head of Bender, Mr. Ghervaziuk said that under such conditions, a new violent conflict is likely to happen, but his gesture seeks to “stabilize the situation in the town.”<\/p>\n

Moldovan Delegation to the Joint Control Commission (JCC) – a monitoring body which activates in the Security Zone – issued a press release on Thursday saying it expresses concern about the Bender administration’s decision.<\/p>\n

“The Moldovan Delegation calls on Bender administration to revoke the decision. Furthermore, we will take all the actions needed to keep the stability in the region,” the press release reads.<\/p>\n

Transnistrian conflict expert, Oazu Nantoi told Moldova.ORG<\/a> that such actions are a new attempt of Russia to generate tensions in the Security Zone.<\/p>\n

“On the left bank of the Nistru River [Transnistria] exists a regime supported, protected and guided by the Russian Federation. Putting it in other words, the puppeteers are in Moscow, while the puppets are the ones based in Transnistria,” Oazu Nantoi said.<\/p>\n

He added that Russia does such actions consciously, since it is well know that Moldova has some obligations towards the European Union in terms of visa liberalization regime.<\/p>\n

Mr. Nantoi explains that in 20 years of conflict with Russia, Moldova has always given up. According to him, Russia takes advantage of the current political stalemate in Chisinau.<\/p>\n

“The so-called decision of the administration in Bender is a way to strain the situation, taking advantage of the chaos and political skedaddle in Chisinau, where our representatives prove that they are not capable to strengthen themselves to solve the problems, such as the Transnistrian conflict,” expert Oazu Nantoi said.<\/p>\n

Ex-diplomat Aurelian Lavric, who is currently Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations at Moldova’s State University, said in a post on Moldova.ORG<\/a> that such a decision is unlikely to have been taken without the consent of the separatist administration based in Tiraspol, but rather likely to have been issued by Moscow.<\/p>\n

“The announcement reveals the courage which the administration in the Transnistrian region has, amidst a lack of authority from the constitutional bodies in Chisinau,” Aurelian Lavric said.<\/p>\n

The international relations specialist maintains that Moldova’s current Government does not intervene appropriately since it has been ousted and, therefore, does not have full empowerment.<\/p>\n

“It is an acting Government, which does not have full empowerment. The administrative and military structures in Tiraspol try to get rid of any Moldovan constitutional institutions in Bender, to make the full annexation of a part of Bessarabia,” Mr. Lavric concluded.<\/p>\n

The tensions in the Security Zone are not new. On March 21, 2013, the illegitimate authorities in Tiraspol installed other illegal checkpoints in the Security Zone without the consent of the Moldova Government and without prior notification of the JCC.<\/p>\n

Over 10 police officers of the separatist administration used force to make sure the Moldovan policemen do not intervene. In the aftermath of the altercation two Moldovan police officers were injured, one being taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n

The Government stated that the basic notifications requirements of the JCC about incidents, their development and investigation are not respected.
