Former Moldovan Minister of Defense Ion Costas believes that Moldova should join NATO if it wants to be part of the European Union. In an interview for “Oastea Moldovei” magazine, the former Minister, who served in 1990s after the former soviet republic gained its independence, said that we should follow Romania’s trace: first join NATO and then the EU.<\/p>\n

“Romania could not adhere to the European Union before it joined NATO,” Ion Costas said. “Getting closer to the Euro-Atlantic structures is the most suitable way for us.”<\/p>\n

He added that having a joint security space is the optimal solution for Moldova. Moreover, the former politician said that a well structured, trained and paid army has to be established.<\/p>\n

Ion Costas pointed out that Moldova should follow the Swiss model, where all the teenagers are being trained for up to seven months and are ready at any time to take up the weapons.<\/p>\n

“Achieving this, there is money needed,” Mr. Costas continued. “For a good army should be invested over 3-5% of the GDP for the first 10-15 years. We spend only 0.2% and pretend to have a modern army.” <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
