There are no legitimate and reliable courts in Transnistria, Moldova’s breakaway region. People residing here have no institution they could go to and complain in case their rights have been violated.<\/p>\n

„People lack rights and are scared,” said Roman Konoplev, Editor-in-Chief at dniester.ru, an independent news outlet in Transnistria, which faced pressure recently from the separatist leadership.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Moldova.ORG<\/a>, Mr. Konoplev said there is no justice in Transnistria and everything works out of law.<\/p>\n

„Any realm in Transnistria is out of international law,” the journalist said. „There operate only on local laws and perceptions.”<\/p>\n

According to him, the so-called law enforcement authorities of Transnistria are used as tools to get rid of those having different viewpoints than the leadership. He pointed out that everyone who pays money can be released from prison, even though he or she killed people before.<\/p>\n

„There is no tribunal or procurement, and therefore, nobody can approach the Transnistrian law enforcement system, because it simply does not exist for everyone,” Roman Konoplev explained.<\/p>\n

He believes that the issue remains to be the burden of the guarantor countries.<\/p>\n

„Based on what is currently going on, they are not interested in these problems. They are too busy with geopolitics,” the journalist stated.<\/p>\n

The most courageous people in Transnistria appeal their rights abuses at the European Court of Human Rights. The self-established courts in Transnistria do not have any legitimacy and do not comply with the international law. No UN country recognizes Transnistria and their self-established institutions as genuine and legal.<\/p>\n

Independent senior expert, Thomas Hammarberg drafted in February 2013 a report for the UN on the situation of human rights in Transnistria. According to his report, there are severe fundamental human rights violations in the separatist region.<\/p>\n

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay urged the authorities in Transnistria to make sure the human rights are being respected. She emphasized that human rights do not have frontiers.<\/p>\n
