After many negotiations on visa liberalization regime for the citizens of Moldova willing to travel to the Schengen zone of the European Union, some issues remain unsolved. A requirement of the European Union towards the Republic of Moldova, which is to secure its Eastern borders, turns quite problematic given that the central Government based in Chisinau does not have full control over the territory of its separatist enclave.<\/p>\n

The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Dirk Schuebel said in an interview recently that the Eastern frontier has to be protected properly.<\/p>\n

“If the European Union agrees to grant a visa-free regime, it is clear that we have to make sure the borders are secured as required,” Dirk Schuebel said. “Under the current circumstances with Transnistria, such thing is rather difficult.”<\/p>\n

The official mentioned that talks in this regard have been initiated and they are hopeful to find a solution.<\/p>\n

Aurelian Lavric, Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations at Moldova’s State University believes that solutions are difficult to find. However, he maintains that installing its own checkpoints at the line of demarcation between Moldova and its breakaway region of Transnistria, the Moldovan Government might be able to secure the Eastern borders this way, since that territory is not under Chisinau’s control.<\/p>\n

“This does not mean giving up the Transnistrian region, but rather establishing order which should avert the infiltration of persons and goods without the authorities’ records.<\/p>\n

European Union fears that smuggling goods could enter easily the Schengen zone if the unstable Eastern region of Moldova is not properly controlled and secured.<\/p>\n

EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood, Stefan Füle said in a comment for Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty that after the conflict in Transnistria will be solved, people residing on that territory will also be able to take advantage of a free movement within the Schengen zone.<\/p>\n
