The political crisis in Moldova benefits the separatist leadership from the breakaway region of Transnistria. Lacking a steady negotiator in Chisinau, the so-called administration based in Tiraspol does not want to further continue the talks for the settlement of the dispute.<\/p>\n

“Leaders in Tiraspol have an additional argument to stop progress on some dossiers,” said Leonid Litra, political expert at IDIS “Viitorul” think tank based in Chisinau. “During periods of political crisis in Moldova, the Transnistrian leaders say it is unclear who their Moldovan counterpart is and it is also unclear what is taking place here.”<\/p>\n

In an interview for Moldova.ORG<\/a>, Leonid Litra further said that it is important the negotiator of the Moldovan side to continue his activity regardless the political crisis.<\/p>\n

As the Government in Chisinau was ousted earlier in March, the Transnistrian conflict settlement seems to have been forgotten by the acting cabinet of the Government, since no further tangible results can be seen.<\/p>\n

Moldova could not achieve its goals on March 14th in Bender where the Unified Control Commission’s session took place. Moldovan delegation came up with a proposal to form an international, independent monitoring body under OSCE auspices to control the military forces deployed in the Security Zone (inner border between Moldova and its separatist region of Transnistria). However, the secessionist side and Russia, which is mediator of the conflict, refused to accept the proposal.<\/p>\n

At the same meeting, Moldovan delegation reiterated its call to include on the meeting agenda the issue of transforming the Russian peacekeepers unilateral checkpoint No.10 into a trilateral one.<\/p>\n

"The Moldovan delegation argued that it is necessary for this checkpoint to meet to the real conditions in the Security Zone and to improve the control over the movement of military units in Bender,” the Reintegration Bureau of Moldovan Government said.<\/p>\n
