Moldova marks today 21 years since the war in Transnistria started. On Memory Day, the volunteers who fought together with the Moldovan army are recalling what happened.<\/p>\n

While some of their relatives were paid to fight against Moldova, they left their homes, crossed the Nistru River and fought for an upstanding Republic of Moldova. Those who survived could see their families a few months later.<\/p>\n

The intimidations coming from the secessionists did not stop ever since. However, they do not regret the fact that they had to spend weeks on the battlefield, because – they say – fought for the symbols of Moldova. Unfortunately, the country has forgotten that.<\/p>\n

Although they thought their problems will end once the war is finished, it did not happen that way. Some people cannot even get the 100 lei ($8) monthly allowance the country offers to those who fought. Their credential is not valid anymore but to get a new one implies a whole set of documents.<\/p>\n

Over 30,000 Moldovan policemen and volunteers fought in 1992. Nearly 300 died, while other 3,500 were injured.<\/p>\n

Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on September 2, 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic, this breakaway entity consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the east bank of the Nistru River and the border of Moldova with Ukraine, on a small part of what used to be, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.<\/p>\n

In 1992 escalated a conflict between Moldova and Russia over this territory. A cease-fire was signed the same year by president of Russia Boris Yeltsin and president of Moldova Mircea Snegur.<\/p>\n

An agreement to withdraw all Russian forces from the trans-Nistrian districts of the Republic of Moldova was signed by Moldovan Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli and Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin in 1994. It stipulated that the 14th Army was to leave the Republic of Moldova within three years, but the agreement was never ratified by the Duma, Russia’s legislature.<\/p>\n
