Amid negative reactions over the OSCE report<\/a> on Moldovan-administered Latin-script schools in Transnistria, the US Embassy in Moldova commends the recommendations given by the international organization to the parties involved in the conflict.<\/p>\n

However, the school principals and teachers working in those eight Romanian language schools said they do not fully agree with the content<\/a> of the report and recommendations made.<\/p>\n

In a statement on their website, the US Embassy said they commend “the efforts of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mission to Moldova to support the Transnistrian settlement process.”<\/p>\n

According to them, the OSCE recommendations “can facilitate education-focused working group discussions and progress between the two sides.” They added that the issue related to the Latin-script schools can be successfully solved since all sides involved in the conflict support this process.<\/p>\n

The OSCE recommendations related to registration, licensing and curricula were particularly unsatisfactory to the Romanian language schools in Transnistria. The OSCE suggested registering the schools with the illegal authorities of the separatist region to achieve ‘legality’ to exist. If such a move would be made, the students who have fought for 20 years to study in their native language of Romanian would be forced to study in Cyrillic-script and to follow a Russian\/Soviet-styled curriculum, which is currently in use in Transnistria.<\/p>\n

“We had talks in December with OSCE officials about the report’s content,” said Eleonora Ceravschi, principal at “Stefan cel Mare” High School in the town of Grigoriopol , which is located in the separatist region. “We mentioned the points which we did not agree with. Moreover, we were told we would be advised prior to the publication of the report in January.
