Moldova has set three main objectives in its diplomacy for 2013. Political expert Cornel Ciurea said in an analysis for IDIS “Viitorul” think tank that Moldova has been pursuing over the years more acceptance and support from the European Union (EU) member states.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the first objective is to gain official recognition of the country’s European prospects from all 27 EU members states.<\/p>\n

“There is not, yet, a formal recognition in this regard that would allow our state to aspire in the near future to the candidate country status,” Cornel Ciurea explained. He argues that although the Association Agreement will be signed sooner or later, its content might not voice any European perspective for Moldova.<\/p>\n

The second objective is to make sure that the international community, especially the European Union, does not link Moldova’s EU perspectives to the Transnistrian conflict, but deal with them separately.<\/p>\n

“Disconnecting Transnistria from the European integration processes would allow Chisinau not to depend on Tiraspol agenda and use the European factor as a strong argument in discussions with decision makers in Transnistria, including the local business,” the expert said. He added that it is difficult, however, “to believe that such a decoupling, albeit partial, could be operated.”<\/p>\n

As a third main objective, Moldova pursues recognition of the principle of differentiation. The country hopes that convincing the European chancelleries and its neighbors in the Eastern Partnership will have a “great regional leap forward that will allow subsequent acceleration of integration processes both in Ukraine and in Belarus.”<\/p>\n

Over the last three years, Moldova has been the most obedient child among the Eastern Partnership member states. The boost in reforms and trust in the European structures determined Moldova to get closer to the EU.
