Moldova is currently in the middle of a period of political instability. Lawmakers and top governmental officials are accusing each other of crimes, irresponsibility, bias, lack of transparency and poor performance. The backwash of this instability started to surface recently when a crime – which some politicians and public authorities kept secret – emerged in the media.<\/p>\n

In an editorial<\/a> for Moldova.ORG, ex-diplomat Aurelian Lavric, currently Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations at Moldova’s State University, said political observers can see that Moldova has fallen into a stalemate. He finds that the root cause of this deadlock is “the lack of control of the political leaders by civil society.” Corruption is another pattern which characterizes the Moldovan politicians.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the author of the opinion piece suggests some measures to tackle the issues.<\/p>\n

“The entire revenue that is earned by the political leaders and their relatives from the enterprises they own should be transferred to the state budget.”<\/p>\n

His argument is derived from the fact that both the Moldovan Premier, Vlad Filat, and the First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Vlad Plahotniuc, are among the richest men in the country. Their wealth “does not come from their salaries, but from the earnings of the companies they own. They are preoccupied with their businesses, not with the state administration."<\/p>\n

Another proposal recommended by the political analyst Aurelian Lavric is to oblige the politicians to fully rely on only the money they earn from the public position they hold.<\/p>\n

“If they would not be able to explain the expenditures which exceed the regular income, they should be dismissed. Based on an investigation, they should be called to account,” Aurelian Lavric wrote. Such measures, he continues, "would probably resolve the desire of businessmen to hold public offices in Parliament or Government in order to multiply their earnings from personal enterprises. The current system encourages them to join politics just to defend and boost their wealth.”<\/p>\n

At the same time, the analyst said that some institutions, such as the Anti-Corruption Center, the National Council of Integrity and the Broadcasting Coordination Council should not be administered by any political parties, but they should be conducted by “personalities with intact reputation.” <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
