During his visit to Moldova on Monday, OSCE Chairperson and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara said that the Transnistrian issue is on top of the agenda as long as the Ukraine holds the Chairmanship this year, after it was taken from Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I have put the Transnistrian settlement process at the top of Ukraine&#8217;s agenda as OSCE Chair, which is why my first official visit as OSCE Chairperson is to Moldova,&quot; Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kozhara said in Chisinau on Monday. &quot;I urge leaders in both Chisinau and Tiraspol to make good use of the time between now and next month&#8217;s 5+2 talks in Lviv so that we can start the year on a positive note with progress in the negotiations.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Transnistria, Moldova&rsquo;s separatist country, borders Ukraine. A large minority of Ukrainians reside in this enclave. Unofficial data estimate 28% of the population to be Ukrainian nationals. The Ukraine is a co-mediator in the conflict which is being negotiated within the so-called &ldquo;5+2&rdquo; talks.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The Ukraine is very familiar with the complex issues involved in the settlement process, both as a mediator and as a neighboring country. I hope that this experience can act as a catalyst for further progress as we chair the 5+2 talks this year on behalf of the OSCE,&quot; Minister Kozhara declared, as quoted by OSCE.<\/p>\n<p>This OSCE Chairperson-in-Office came with a concrete resolution to Chisinau. He believes that the first step should be the establishment of a free movement of people on both banks of the Nistru River, which separates the region from Moldova.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a first step, the re-opening of the Gura Bicului bridge to traffic would be a positive signal of the commitment of both sides to the process and immediately improve the lives of the people on both banks of the river,&rdquo; Mr. Kozhara said.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian official will travel to Transnistria&rsquo;s so-called capital of Tiraspol on Tuesday where he is expected to meet the leader of the region, Evgheny Shevchuk.<\/p>\n<p>Moldovan Foreign Minister, Iurie Leanca emphasized the need to establish a joint economic area between both conflicting sides.
