Moldova has made significant progress in asylum and statelessness field, the authorities respecting the role of civil society and the involvement of non-governmental organizations in such issues. The assessment was made by United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Regional Representative for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine Oldrich Andrysek during his first visit to the country.<\/p>\n

“UNHCR welcomes the achievements of the Republic of Moldova in the area of asylum and statelessness and reiterates its support for further consolidation of the institutions responsible for protecting and integrating persons in need of international protection,” Oldrich Andrysek said.<\/p>\n

The official underlined that the Government appreciates the involvement of civil society in tackling the issue, becoming more inclusive and tolerant. He praised the Moldovan leadership “for its openness and generosity to host vulnerable refugees and asylum-seekers fleeing persecution and conflict in Syria and other countries and for its readiness to further improve the national asylum legislation.”<\/p>\n

Mr. Andrysek’s visit to Moldova brought a change in the statute the UNHCR office in Chisinau has. He publicly stated that this office changed from a representation into a national office.<\/p>\n

“The transition of the UNHCR Representation to a National Office is a recognition of the maturity of the Moldovan Government and society in handling refugee issues,” Mr. Andrysek said.<\/p>\n

UNHCR reports that over 5,000 people in Moldova identified themselves as stateless, according to the latest census. The data shows that some 2,000 stateless people have been registered formally by the Moldovan authorities.<\/p>\n
