The year of 2013 is going to be an important year for the relations between Moldova and the European Union. The statement belongs to the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Chisinau, Dirk Schuebel, made in an interview<\/a> with RFE\/RL.<\/p>\n

The European official stated that two partnerships that are still under negotiation are the main objectives for this year.<\/p>\n

“We would like to conclude the negotiations of an Association Agreement, including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area by the time of Vilnius Summit of the Eastern Partnership,” Dirk Schuebel said. “I think that this is a realistic objective.”<\/p>\n

The Association Agreement was launched in January 2010. It is a program that supports fundamental reforms on economic recovery, governance and liberalization of trade between Moldova and the European Union.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the EU and Moldova are currently holding negotiations over a visa-free travel regime. The project has entered the second phase that envisages implementation of reforms and their evaluation.<\/p>\n

“We also want to move on with the second phase of the visa dialogue and if possible, to conclude these negotiations as soon as possible,” Mr. Schuebel added.<\/p>\n

The official makes some recommendations to the Moldovan leadership. He urges the politicians “to work as much as they can and to complete the process as much as possible.” Only this way, he says, the country can advance.<\/p>\n

The Republic of Moldova has largely benefited from the EU funds. Following the “more for more” principle, Moldova got up to 122 million Euro, instead of 94 million as previously planned.<\/p>\n

The Head of the EU Delegation explained that a certain period of time is needed until the reforms will be observable.<\/p>\n

“I believe that some people have already been in touch with some little European projects,” the official said. “Maybe sometimes they don’t even know that this improvement comes from finances that have been provided by the European taxpayers.”<\/p>\n

Dirk Schuebel is hopeful that Moldova will continue the reforms process that was already initiated. He suggests the reform of the judiciary, since the fight against corruption should be the priority of the leadership.<\/p>\n

“I am very convinced that Moldova is on the right track,” Mr. Schuebel said. “In the end, if the reform process is continued, a better Moldova with visible reforms, with visible progress for each citizen, will stand. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
