The political analyst Bogdan \u0162îrdea believes that the Transnistrian conflict cannot be solved following the Cyprus model.<\/p>\n

"Many political scientists speak about the Cypriot scenario for Transnistrian conflict settlement. It means that Moldova will integrate into the EU and will leave Transnistria as an uncontrolled enclave. Moldova will raise its standard of living, until it will become attractive to Transnistria. But there is an important element in the Cypriot model. The conflict was between two NATO member countries, between an EU member and a candidate country, which means a very high status for European integration. They were candidate countries from 1987. More than twenty years passed already. In Moldova the situation is more complicated. Russian Federation with which we, directly or indirectly, are in a relationship of strategic partnership or conflict is not a NATO member, it is a member of the Collective Security Treaty. Firstly, it’s a completely different entity. Secondly, it is a geopolitical entity completely different", the analyst stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe.<\/p>\n

The political analyst said also that if we leave an enclave under the control of the geopolitical actor which has connection neither to the European Union, nor NATO, "we risk losing Transnistria".<\/p>\n

"If we lose Transnistria, the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova will be contest by other actors, and firstly (why not?) by Bulgaria, or Romania, less by Ukraine. But, at least, Ukraine together with Russia will claim Transnistrian region. This is the situation. The risk is total fragmentation. I partly share the Euro-optimism of many officials, because we would lose Transnistria, the country’s industrial base, we would lose a large percentage of the national territory and citizens", Bogdan \u0162îrdea accentuated.
