The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Dirk Schuebel said at the end of 2012 that the Republic of Moldova has made steps forward with regard to its relations with the European Union.<\/p>\n

“During the last year, negotiations on the Association Agreement proceeded well and advanced; negotiations on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area were started and advanced quickly; the second round of the Visa Dialogue was launched; an Aviation Agreement [was] signed, which entered into force, and Moldova joined the 7th EU Framework Programme on Research and Development,” Dirk Schuebel told MOLDOVA.ORG.<\/p>\n

The European official praised the achievements of 2012 and added that Moldova will be granted 28 million Euros in addition to the “envisaged 94 million Euros in recognition of the reform efforts undertaken.”<\/p>\n

He mentioned that the EU support can also be seen throughout the crucial official visits to Moldova of some high level officials, reminding of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Chisinau in August, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso visiting the country in November and Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski who was welcomed in December.<\/p>\n

“These visits have been clear signs of appreciation by the European leaders that the country is on the right track,” Dirk Schuebel said.<\/p>\n

However, the EU official said there is much left to be done. He pointed out that a “faster speed in the process of reforms in the law enforcement institutions and the judiciary” is still needed.<\/p>\n

The fight against corruption remains the main issue to be tackled in Moldova. According to him, reforms in this area will positively influence the quality of life and even the relations with the European Union.<\/p>\n

“These reforms are closely linked with the fight against corruption, which I consider as the single most problem the country needs to address in the next year and beyond, also because successful reforms in these areas will have a direct, positive impact on the further advancing of our bilateral relations,” the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova concluded.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
