Russian Foreign Minister Serghey Lavrov said the Transnistrian conflict should be settled with respect to the territorial integrity and neutrality of Moldova, granting a special statute to the Transnistrian region. The Russian official pointed out that the Western partners involved in the “5+2” talks “try to persuade Chisinau (capital of Moldova) that the Euro-Atlantic perspective is the future of this country, joining NATO accordingly.”<\/p>\n

“We do not want to prohibit anything to anyone, but this is the reality: Transnistria will not join NATO. If there are individuals keen to damage the neutrality statute of Moldova, the issue will suffer cardinal chances,” Serghey Lavrov said.<\/p>\n

The Russian Foreign Minister mentioned that the Western partners put pressure on Tiraspol (so-called capital of Transnistria) and the businessmen from the region have to suffer.<\/p>\n

“The economic and social issues of the region are a priority for us at the moment,” Lavrov said. “Our partners still say that the political challenges have to be solved first, and later on, if the political outcomes will be satisfactory for them, they will think of a way to economically develop the Transnistrian region.”<\/p>\n

However, the Russian official stated that he intends to open a consulate and a center of Russian culture in Tiraspol, given that the statute of the separatist region is still unclear.<\/p>\n

“Chisinau has to give up the bill issued in 2005 which envisages that the Transnistrian conflict has to be settled in the framework of a unitary state,” the official said.<\/p>\n

Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on September 2, 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic, this breakaway entity consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the east bank of the Nistru River and the border of Moldova with Ukraine, on a small part of what used to be, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.<\/p>\n

In 1992 escalated a conflict between Moldova and Russia over this territory. A cease-fire was signed the same year by president of Russia Boris Yeltsin and president of Moldova Mircea Snegur. An agreement to withdraw all Russian forces from the trans-Nistrian districts of the Republic of Moldova was signed by Moldovan Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli and Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin in 1994.
