Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Iurie Leanca submitted on Monday his letter of resignation to Premier Vlad Filat. However, the Moldovan Prime Minister rejected his resignation request.<\/p>\n

In a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the department announced that Iurie Leanca is complying with his vow to step aside if his country will not have the freedom of movement in the Schengen zone by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

"The decision comes to honor the public commitment, made last year by the Minister Iurie Leanca, to resign if until January 2013 necessary conditions will not be fulfilled for lifting visa regime with EU for short-term travel of Moldovan citizens in the Schengen area”.<\/p>\n

Iurie Leanca said when he took his term in office that he will do his best to achieve a visa-free travel regime with the European Union by the end of 2012. The official promised to leave office if he does not accomplish this goal.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Vlad Filat noted that Iurie Leanca is among the best Ministers his Government has.<\/p>\n

“Looking back at those three years (in office), the state’s foreign affairs is the sector that registered the greatest progress,” Vlad Filat said.<\/p>\n

Moldova is currently carrying out negotiations with the European Commission to establish a visa liberalization program. The European Union has issued an Action Plan that includes a set of reforms the Moldovan Government has to implement.<\/p>\n

President of the EU Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said in Chisinau a month ago that the Moldovans have chances to freely travel in the Schengen zone by the end of 2013, not by the end of this year as Iurie Leanca initially forecasted. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
