The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon praised the Republic of Moldova for the reforms implemented so far and has expressed his confidence that the country will be able to settle its separatist conflict in Transnistria considering the commitment of the Government and the Parliament so far.<\/p>\n

According to a press release of the Council of Europe, the official’s visit to Moldova “had revealed the realism and good faith shown by the Government and the Parliament in their approach to resolving the Transnistria conflict, which could even provide pointers for resolving this type of conflict in the future.”<\/p>\n

However, Mr. Mignon is hopeful that the authorities based in Tiraspol (so-called capital of Transnistria) will become more committed to manage this conflict.<\/p>\n

"I am also pleased to see the positive reception given to this initiative on the whole in Tiraspol and I hope that the Supreme Soviet will swiftly take the decision to fully commit to this dialogue,” Jean-Claude Mignon said.<\/p>\n

While addressing the Parliament on Thursday, Mr. Mignon urged the political parties to cooperate for the benefit of the country to make sure the reforms initiated go further. He specifically referred to the EU Action Plan and the revision of the Constitution, suggesting that Article 78 should be modified to avoid any other political stalemates over the election of the head of state.<\/p>\n

"Even though future accession to the European Union remains a strong motivating factor for this country, the Council of Europe will continue to be, for the near future, the right institutional framework for progress in achieving reforms,” said the official, emphasizing that this progress first and foremost benefited the people of Moldova while providing the best mechanisms of speeding up the EU integration process. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
