The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova voted against the usage of soviet passports during elections. The initiative was proposed by the Liberal Party of Moldova, although the Communist Party did not support the bill.<\/p>\n

MP Ana Gutu who proposed the bill noted that Moldova is the last former soviet republic that still accepts soviet passports. She said that over 270,000 Moldovans hold a soviet passport. The deputy pointed out that after 20 years of independence it is illegal to accept an ID of a state that does not exist.<\/p>\n

Most of the elderly in Moldova continue to use their soviet identification documents. Up until now they could cast their vote during elections and get their retirement pension using the soviet ID.<\/p>\n

The Communists said that such a move will margin the right to vote of some 270,000 people.<\/p>\n

“Any ID that has an identification number, a photograph and was legally issued, can and should be accepted at the polling stations,” a Communist MP said.<\/p>\n

Following this bill, all citizens who want to vote will be averted from doing so without holding a Moldovan ID.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
