The United Nations will begin a new program of cooperation with the Republic of Moldova that will start in January 2013 and will last until 2017.<\/p>\n

According to a press release of the UN Mission to Moldova, the 2013-2017 UN-Moldova Partnership Framework “Towards Unity in Action” supports Moldova’s priorities and development challenges in three main areas: democratic governance, justice, equality and human rights; human development and social inclusion; and environment, climate change and disaster risk management.<\/p>\n

Addressing the Moldovan Parliament on Thursday, UN Resident Coordinator Nicola Harrington-Buhay said that the organization she represents is looking for new ways to foster greater cooperation between sides.<\/p>\n

“The timing of my presentation could not be better,” Nicola Harrington-Buhay said. “Not only are we celebrating the 64th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but on 1 January 2013, the United Nations will begin a new five-year programme of cooperation with the Republic of Moldova”.<\/p>\n

The UN official emphasized that top priorities for the Parliament in 2013 should be the amendment of the National Human Rights Action Plan, the Laws on Gender Equality and on Electoral Financing. He added that another area to be tackled is the better integration of migrants and refugees in the society.<\/p>\n

However, Nicola Harrington-Buhay praised the Parliament of Moldova for its achievements in 2012. She said that a lot of progress has been made and the country advanced in all eight goals previously set.<\/p>\n

“Looking back at 2012, the Parliament can be proud of its many legislative successes in improving lives by honoring human rights and development commitments”, the UN official said. “This year saw important steps to protect people living with HIV\/AIDS, to empower children and adults with intellectual disabilities and better include Roma people in all spheres of life”.<\/p>\n

Moldova joined the United Nations in 1992. There are some twenty resident and non-resident UN agencies, funds and programmes that work in Moldova and are designed to support the country’s development priorities. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
