After the US House of Representatives’ voted in November on lifting the Jackson-Vanik Amendment for Moldova and Russia, the US Senate did the same on Thursday. The bill was approved with simple majority. Only three Democrats voted against, while other three abstained.<\/p>\n

The regulation is enacted once the US President Barack Obama promulgates it.<\/p>\n

"The legislation will ensure that American businesses and workers are able to take full advantage of the WTO rules and market access commitments that the United States worked so hard to negotiate," Barack Obama said in a press statement. "We are also one step closer to realizing job-creating export opportunities and leveling the playing field for American workers, farmers, ranchers, and service providers."<\/p>\n

The provision of this bill approves “the extension of nondiscriminatory treatment” to the traded products from Moldova. Russian Federation is also facing the same treatment within the framework of a joint bill that includes both Moldova and Russia to be exempted from this amendment.<\/p>\n

"The United States welcomes the passage by the Senate today of H.R. 6156, which terminates the application of the Jackson-Vanik Amendment to Russia and Moldova and authorizes the President to extend Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) to both countries," Mark C. Toner, Deputy Spokesperson of the US Department of State said.<\/p>\n

Moldovan goods currently have access to U.S. markets through exemptions to the legislation that have been applied on an annual basis,” the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau told Moldova.ORG in August this year.<\/p>\n

Jackson-Vanik Amendment was imposed to the Soviet Union in 1974 on the grounds of human rights violations. After the dissolution of the USSR, the Amendment applied to all new established republics, including Moldova.<\/p>\n
