Thursday evening the UN resolution granted on Palestine non-member observer State status with 138 votes in favor, 9 against and 41 abstentions.<\/p>\n<p>Moldova, Romania, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Poland and other European countries abstained, while France, Italy, Ireland, Greece, Switzerland and many others voted in favor.<\/p>\n<p>Nine countries, among them the United States, Israel, Canada, Czech Republic, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Panama and Palau, voted against the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized on Thursday the need of stepping up efforts to restore peace in the Middle East and asked Israelis and Palestinians to show leadership to reach a two-State solution.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I call on Israeli and Palestinian leaders to show vision and determination,&rdquo; Mr. Ban said. &ldquo;I also urge the international community to help them forge a credible political path that will meet the legitimate aspirations of both sides.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas addressed the Assembly before the vote stating that his delegation came to affirm the legitimacy of the states that needs to gain independence.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We did not come here seeking to delegitimize a State established years ago, and that is Israel; rather we came to affirm the legitimacy of the State that must now achieve its independence, and that is Palestine,&rdquo; Mahmoud Abbas said.<\/p>\n<p>According to an UN press release, Ron Prosor, Israel&rsquo;s Ambassador to the UN said his delegation did not accept the resolution &ldquo;because this resolution is so one-sided, it doesn&rsquo;t advance peace, it pushes it backwards.&rdquo; He added that peace could only be achieved through negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There&rsquo;s only one route to Palestinian statehood and that route does not run through this chamber in New York. That route runs through direct negotiations between Jerusalem and Ramallah that will lead to a secure and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;There are no shortcuts. No quick fixes.
