President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso delivered a public speech on Friday at the National Palace in Moldova’s capital of Chisinau. The European official praised Moldova for the reforms implemented so far, but stressed the need to continue reforms.<\/p>\n

He underlined that the reforms should not only be voted by politicians, but the population has to be aware of their content and why they are important.<\/p>\n

“Reforms and modernization have to be accepted by citizens, so they can be successful,” Jose Manuel Barroso said in Chisinau. “It is not about politicians, but improving everyday life of people.”<\/p>\n

Boosting the economic relations between Moldova and the European Union is an important feature of the cooperation between sides. Referring to the agreements which are being currently negotiated, Mr. Barroso said Moldovan economy needs certain standards, so it complies with the European market.<\/p>\n

At the moment, Moldova works on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with EU, as well as the Liberalization of Visa Regime.<\/p>\n

One major question of Moldovans waiting for Mr. Barroso in Chisinau was whether their country will join the European Union or not. The European official said, during his speech, that Moldova is part of Europe even though it is not part of the European Union.<\/p>\n

“There is no doubt that Moldova belongs to Europe. It shares a culture,” Jose Manuel Barroso said.<\/p>\n

“You belong to our family of nations. European Union will continue standing by your side, by the people of Moldova.”<\/p>\n

European integration aim implies costly reforms, Mr. Barroso explained. He added that they have a transformative goal on the country and this will help Moldova to get closer to EU.<\/p>\n
