More than 50% of Moldovans are against joining NATO. A recent survey at national level showed that 54% of citizens want to preserve the neutrality of Moldova, while 17% are in favor of joining the military structure.<\/p>\n

In an interview with UNIMEDIA<\/a> news portal, Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta said that the cooperation with NATO does not violate the Constitution and the neutrality statute of the country. According to him, all neutral countries participate in peacekeeping missions that are under NATO operation, but which exist with the UN consent.<\/p>\n

“It does not matter who implements – either NATO or OSCE; the legitimization matters,” Vitalie Marinuta said.<\/p>\n

The official emphasized that it is not fair to become part of the European Union and benefit from all the economic, cultural and social projects without making a contribution, as well, and pretend the country is neutral.<\/p>\n

“We have to prove we are not only security consumers, but also security providers,” the Moldovan Minister of Defense said.<\/p>\n

Some 100 Moldovan trained troops are now ready to get involved in any mission under aegis of UN. According to the Moldovan Minister of Defense, the team was already rated by foreign experts and was labeled as “ready to fight.” Some Moldovan helicopters are currently operating in Afghanistan also with UN consent.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
