After spending several days in Moldova and its breakaway region of Transnistria, Graham Watson, the head of the European Liberal Democratic Party said that persecutions invoked by the interlocutors from Transnistria seem more as political dissidence, an unacceptable thing for a European country.<\/p>\n

The EU official had the chance to meet with civil society representatives and directly talk to them. However, Graham Watson did not meet any Moldovan officials.<\/p>\n

In an interview sponsored by Friedrich-Ebert Foundation and Foreign Policy Association, Mr. Watson said that Transnistria “is almost an anarchic state which seems to be outside the constitutional framework of Moldova and that is a worry for everybody.”<\/p>\n

In order to enhance the settlement of the conflict, the official suggests that the European Union has to do its best in strengthening the Moldovan Government by trying “to give them better opportunities to control what is happening in Transnistria.”<\/p>\n

According to him, there is needed a direct dialogue with Tiraspol, so-called capital of the separatist region of Transnistria. Such a dialogue would “deal with some of the cases of injustice.”<\/p>\n

The European leader argues that they need to work closely on their relations with Russia in order to limit Russian interference in the territory of Moldova, a sovereign state.<\/p>\n

It is to note that Moldova is the last country in Europe to still have Russian troops deployed on foreign territory. <\/p>\n

Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on September 2, 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic, this breakaway entity consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the east bank of the Nistru River and the border of Moldova with Ukraine, on a small part of what used to be, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.<\/p>\n

In 1992 escalated a conflict between Moldova and Russia over this territory. A cease-fire was signed the same year by president of Russia Boris Yeltsin and president of Moldova Mircea Snegur. An agreement to withdraw all Russian forces from the trans-Nistrian districts of the Republic of Moldova was signed by Moldovan Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli and Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin in 1994. It stipulated that the 14th Army was to leave the Republic of Moldova within three years, but the agreement was never ratified by the Duma, Russia’s legislature.<\/p>\n

The Transnistrian conflict settlement is made within the “5+2” format.
