Once the European Union will lift the visa requirements for the citizens of Moldova, the people will be able to freely travel within the Schengen area, which gathers 25 countries of Europe.<\/p>\n

Although it is still unknown when that will happen, the European Union says that Moldova is making progress in this regard. A liberalized travel regime would mean only entering these countries and staying up to 90 days, but it does not imply employment.<\/p>\n

“Once we have achieved an agreement on visa free regime, the Moldovan citizens can travel for up to 3 months in a row without any visa, only with their Moldovan passport to the Schengen countries of the European Union,” the EU Ambassador to Moldova, Dirk Schuebel said in an interview<\/a> with MOLDOVA.ORG.<\/p>\n

“They can move within three months freely inside the Schengen zone, but they will not be allowed to go for an employment in that period.”<\/p>\n

Travelling within the Schengen zone does not mean travelling to all EU countries. EU member states, such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus are not part of the Schengen zone yet. Hence, Moldova will have to establish bilateral agreements with these countries in order to benefit from the same privilege within the entire European Union.<\/p>\n

Three other non-EU countries are part of the Schengen area. These are Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. The Schengen zone was founded in 1985 and is a territory where the free movement of persons is guaranteed. All the borders between these countries are abolished, being secured by a single external border.<\/p>\n
