Twenty years after the escalation of a conflict between Moldova and Russia, the Transnistrian issue still remains unsolved. Amid several light attempts to move the things forward, the combatants did not find the perfect resolution for the conflict.The Transnistrian conflict settlement is made within the “5+2” format. It includes representatives of the sides, mediators and observers in the negotiation process – Moldova, Transnistria, Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE (as mediators), and the US and the EU (as observers).<\/p>\n

Expert in Transnistrian conflict management Oazu Nantoi told MOLDOVA.ORG that the issue has to be tackled with concrete actions, not with negotiations.<\/p>\n

According to the analyst, the issue has to be resolved “not by negotiation, but through substantive coercion actions on those who do not want to comply [with the status-quo] and offer positive perspectives for those willing to live in the Republic of Moldova.”<\/p>\n

Mr. Nantoi believes that the “5+2” talks are a pitfall for Moldova. He sees Russia as the main source of conflict in the region, Russia’s membership in the “5+2” format being a contradiction.<\/p>\n

“Russian Federation is a real side in the conflict. When we take a look at the negotiation format, Russia has the innocent status of mediator in the conflict,” Oazu Nantoi said. “Hence, in my opinion, the negotiation talks emerge from a wrong fundamental idea. This format says that this is an inner conflict, between us, those from the left and right bank of Nistru River, fact that is untrue.”<\/p>\n

Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on September 2, 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic, this breakaway entity consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the east bank of the Nistru River and the border of Moldova with Ukraine, on a small part of what used to be, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.<\/p>\n

In 1992 escalated a conflict between Moldova and Russia over this territory. A cease-fire was signed the same year by president of Russia Boris Yeltsin and president of Moldova Mircea Snegur. An agreement to withdraw all Russian forces from the trans-Nistrian districts of the Republic of Moldova was signed by Moldovan Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli and Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin in 1994.
