In recent years Republic Moldova goes through a political and economic transitional period. However, the current government is making good progress, but there are many issues they should work on.<\/p>\n

Kalman Mizsei, the former EU special representative for the Republic of Moldova spoke about the progress and failures of the current government in an interview for the publication Adevarul.<\/p>\n

“In the last two years, Moldova continues successful negotiations for European integration. Although fragile in terms of domestic policy, it seems to be the greatest success. That is while the EU is going through one of the most complicated moments ever", Kalman Mizsei says.<\/p>\n

According to Kalman Mizsei, “it is most likely that this persistence will finalize with the signature of three important documents: Free Trade Agreement, the agreement on visa liberalization and Association Agreement. It will happen even if the opposition desperately wants Moldova to become a member of Euro-Asiatic Union”.<\/p>\n

The European official also acknowledged existing progress of the current government in democratic development, but the Alliance for European Integration and the opposition should make major effort in this regard.<\/p>\n

“Although Moldova seems to be the most democratic country in the CIS, the democracy is fragile. It is a step forward that the President was elected. However, the ruling coalition made this decision in a careless way and not the smartest one. The way in which the government wanted to change the Constitution was unconstitutional and not good for them. Moldovans should answer with a firm and conscious "No" to government’s attempts to change the Constitution in that direction”.<\/p>\n

Finally, Kalman Mizsei is confident that Moldova can become a successful story of Europe if there will be progress in the future.<\/p>\n

"Russia must withdraw its troops from Moldovan in exchange for two things. The first one is international guarantees for the agreement’s stability, of course, with Russian participation. It should be a realistic guarantee, based on international law, instead of Russia as imaginary guarantor. Secondly, there should be a credible and serious agreement, taking into account Russia’s expectations on Moldova’s neutrality. I think we are moving towards this direction, but slowly. Despite existing obstacles, Moldova has the potential to become a success story of Europe. It is important to understand what the necessary political ingredients are”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
