Academy of Sciences of Moldova reiterates their position regarding the official language of the country and disagrees with the Parliament. According to the Constitution the official language of the state is “Moldavian.” Amid pressure from some politicians that the state language of the country is “Moldavian,” the Academy keeps its decision that “the correct naming of the official state language of the Republic of Moldova is Romanian language.”<\/p>\n

The Academy says that the truth is also supported by prestigious linguists worldwide (Moldova, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Germany, France, Spain, the USA and others), as well as supported by E. Coseriu, R. Budagov, R. Potrowski, V. Semchinschi etc.<\/p>\n

Moldovan society is split when it comes to the name of the language they speak. Some call it “Moldavian”, denomination derived from the country’s name itself, while another part says it is Romanian.<\/p>\n

The history tells us that “Moldavian” was the name given by Russians to the Romanian language spoken in Moldova. After 1812 the Russians attempted to describe it as distinct from the language spoken in Romania.<\/p>\n

“The A to Z of Moldova” Encyclopedia explains that Romanian language and what is called "Moldavian” is nothing more than standard Romanian with a regional accent.<\/p>\n
