The Republic of Moldova will not join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) but will continue to bolster the relations with the military block, says Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti. He asserted that good relations with NATO will not affect the relations with the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n

Both the President and the Speaker of Parliament Marian Lupu said during a meeting with WEP 5 Ambassadors (West European Partners: Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden and Ireland) that the permanent neutrality status of Moldova is mentioned in the Constitution and the country will continue to keep its neutrality. However, Mr. Lupu emphasized that such a status does not bar Moldova from bringing their legislation in line with the European Union standards.<\/p>\n

The WEP 5 group is an informal group of ambassadors of western European neutral countries with NATO. They hold meetings and manage their joint activities in regard with cooperation with NATO.<\/p>\n

According to Marian Lupu, the European integration of Moldova has become a major domestic and foreign policy goal.<\/p>\n

The speaker of Parliament mentioned that the positive experience of the five neutral countries with NATO is an important step for Moldova to follow. He expects his country to continue strengthen relations with NATO following the model of the WEP 5 countries.<\/p>\n

A sociological survey shows that a significant percentage of Moldovans sees NATO as an enemy and consider it an aggressive military organization. Some 25% of citizens would accept Moldova to join NATO in the near future.<\/p>\n
