The leaders from separatist region of Transnistria will travel easier in the European Union after the Council of EU has lifted on Thursday the travel ban imposed in 2003. At that time 17 people responsible for the lack of cooperation to promote a political settlement of the conflict were banned from entering EU, the Council said in a press release.<\/p>\n

“This acknowledges progress seen under the new leadership in negotiating certain aspects of a settlement of the Transnistrian conflict within the "5+2" framework,” the same press statement said.<\/p>\n

The Council of the European Union warned that travel bans could be re-imposed if the issues related to the Latin-script schools in Transnistria will continue to exist. However, the relevant provisions have not been removed, but they do no longer target any specific persons.<\/p>\n

“The Council will continue to monitor and make periodic reviews of developments with respect to progress towards a political settlement, the freedom of movement of persons and the situation of Latin-script Moldovan schools,” the press service of the EU Council said in the press release.<\/p>\n

The procedure will enter into force on Friday, September 28.<\/p>\n

Last year, the so-called authorities from Transnistria tried to divert the functioning of “Stefan cel Mare si Sfant” High School – a Latin-script school — from Grigoriopol town. Since September 1 for a period of three weeks, the students and teachers attending this school were subject to intimidation.<\/p>\n

The teachers of the Latin-script schools in Transnistria are concerned that for 11 years this high school “has to run its activities into exile.” The students as well as the staff have to travel to Dorotcaia village which is located in Dubasari County. They are forced to cross daily the so-called border between Moldova and Transnistria.<\/p>\n

“We are concerned because the right of the indigenous population to study and express itself at all levels in its mother tongue is still disregarded and despised by the new “leadership” in Tiraspol as it has been in the past. In this matter, we see no difference, no change for the better, as it was promised during the electoral campaign,” Eleonora Cercavschi, the President of the Transnistrian Teachers Association “Lumina” said.<\/p>\n

The European Union is part of the “5+2” talks which is the format for the Transnistrian conflict settlement. The EU together with the U.S. is observer within the process, while Moldova, Transnistria, Russia, Ukraine and OSCE are mediators in the conflict.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
