During the “5+2” talks over Transnistrian conflict settlement Moldova came up with the idea to change the military status of the peacekeeping mission from Transnistria in an international civil peacekeeping mission. The Council of Europe has also suggested the replacement of the military mission in Moldova’s breakaway region.<\/p>\n

Moldovan Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta told MOLDOVA.ORG that political will is needed to achieve this goal. According to him, the soldiers have already concluded their activity in the separatist region of Transnistria.<\/p>\n

“The soldiers ended their mission in this security zone a long time ago,” Vitalie Marinuta said. “The military conflict is exhausted. There is left finding a political solution by peaceful and diplomatic means.”<\/p>\n

The idea to establish an international civil peacekeeping mission comes after a tragic incident at the beginning of the year at Vadul lui Voda checkpoint when an 18-year-old boy was fatally shot by a Russian soldier deployed in the security zone.<\/p>\n

Moldovan Minister believes that the difficulties within the Transnistrian conflict resolution come from the so-called leadership of the secessionist region, as well as from Russia, sides which are not willing to find a solution.<\/p>\n

“I find impolitic the resistance of so-called Transnistrian authorities and the Russian officials, which block the conflict settlement,” Mr. Marinuta said.<\/p>\n

The Transnistrian conflict settlement is made within the “5+2” format. It includes representatives of the sides, mediators and observers in the negotiation process – Moldova, Transnistria, Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE (as mediators), and the US and the EU (as observers).<\/p>\n

Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on September 2, 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic, this breakaway entity consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the east bank of the Nistru River and the border of Moldova with Ukraine, on a small part of what used to be, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.<\/p>\n

In 1992 escalated a conflict between Moldova and Russia over this territory. A cease-fire was signed the same year by president of Russia Boris Yeltsin and president of Moldova Mircea Snegur. An agreement to withdraw all Russian forces from the trans-Nistrian districts of the Republic of Moldova was signed by Moldovan Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli and Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin in 1994.
