Communist symbols, hammer and sickle will be officially banned in Moldova as of October 1, 2012. The bill – prohibiting the symbols of the totalitarian communist regimes and condemning the crimes with which they are associated – was voted by lawmakers on July 12 and was published today in the Moldovan Official Paper (Monitorul Official).<\/p>\n

The Communist Party leadership expressed their anger over the bill.<\/p>\n

“We are obligatorily going to appeal the Parliament’s decision at the Constitutional Court,” the head of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin said months ago. He stated that the law was initiated by an outside political force.<\/p>\n

Communist deputy Sergiu Sarbu said that he is about to submit an appeal at the Constitutional Court in the following days.<\/p>\n

Liberal Party head Mihai Ghimpu regrets that the Communism wasn’t condemned earlier at an International Court.<\/p>\n

“It is a big mistake for Europe not to condemn the Communists in the same way the Nazis were in Nuremburg Trial. In the previous century not only the Moldovans suffered, but also Ukrainians, Russians and all who lived here. The sickle and hammer are the symbols for which innocent people were deported to Siberia and killed,” the Liberal deputy said.<\/p>\n

The Liberal Party was the one to initiate this bill and had it passed within the Parliament with 53 votes out of 101.<\/p>\n

President of the Judicial Commission Victor Popa told ProTV news outlet that in case a political party will continue to use the communist symbols after being fined twice, the Justice Ministry may consider the cessation of the party’s activity.
