 Switzerland has become not only an important political and economic partner to Moldova but also a friend that offers humanitarian assistance to the Moldovan civil society in need. The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Switzerland were established in 1992. First contacts between the states go back to the XIX century. Then, many citizens of Switzerland, mainly wine-growers from canton Vaud, relocated in Bessarabia.<\/p>\n

The Swiss statistics show that in January 2012, 775 citizens of Moldova were registered as residing in Switzerland. Out of these, 134 are university students, and another nine Moldovans are college students.<\/p>\n

On September 2, 2012 the Republic of Moldova and the Swiss Confederation marked 20 years of bilateral relations. Moldovan Ambassador to Geneva, Victor Moraru told MOLDOVA.ORG that the 20th anniversary is a milestone in the development of bilateral relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

“The Republic of Moldova and Switzerland enjoy good bilateral relations and have much in common, including neutrality, democratic values and membership in global and regional organisations,” Ambassador Moraru said.<\/p>\n

Moldova opened its diplomatic mission in June 1997 with headquarters in Geneva. Likewise, the Embassy serves as Moldova’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations. The cooperation in areas of mutual interest between Moldova and Switzerland gets difficult sometimes because neither Moldova nor the Swiss Confederation have fully-fledged diplomatic missions in their capitals.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Mr. Moraru said that Moldova and Switzerland share similar views in terms of international affairs.<\/p>\n

“The existing friendly sentiments towards each other, our shared perceptions of democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights, the market economy, stable development and peaceful settlement of international conflicts, are valuable elements on which to develop our relations further,” Mr. Moraru pointed out.<\/p>\n

“It is of great importance to Republic of Moldova that [our] current good, constructive and increasingly active bilateral relations continue to develop and deepen.”<\/p>\n

Although the political dialogue is meaningful, especially within the framework of international bodies, the sides recognize there is a need to bolster cooperation in trade and investment sectors. Mr. Moraru emphasized that one has a hard time entering the Swiss market that implies high quality standards for imported foreign goods, or attracting Swiss investments.<\/p>\n

“Switzerland’s economy is highly sophisticated, stable and open to global trade opportunities. Know-how is key driver of the economy. It imports raw or semi-manufactured materials for processing and exports high-value-added products. Its investments are oriented towards highly developed markets and countries rich in raw materials,” explained the Moldovan Ambassador to Switzerland.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan Embassy in Geneva is currently working closely with the Swiss authorities to ensure that the next Swiss Cooperation Strategy 2014-2017 for the Republic of Moldova will be aligned to their European integration priorities. A Joint Moldovan-Ukrainian Forum will be held in Zurich in October this year. The program will focus on exploring manufacturing and outsourcing opportunities for Swiss companies in Moldova and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“We hope very much that bilateral economic and commercial ties will gradually strengthen and the Republic of Moldova will become for Swiss investors an interesting country to invest in for a medium term,” Moldova’s diplomat to Geneva said.<\/p>\n

Among some groups of Swiss citizens and also institutions, Moldova has a reputation as the poorest country in Europe. However, Moldova’s image of a country with legitimate European aspirations and perspective is gaining ground in Switzerland, the Ambassador said. The diplomatic mission provides promotional materials on investment opportunities offered by free economic zones in Moldova or on exhibitions organized here to relevant Swiss organizations.<\/p>\n
