The President of Romania, Traian Basescu has stated yesterday, on September 4th<\/sup>, that he asked Romanian politicians not to make statements in support of Moldova’s accession to NATO, “while the neighboring country declared its neutrality in its Constitution”.<\/p>\n

“I’ve seen some statements concerning Republic of Moldova in NATO. I would have the request, even if the statements are made by Romanian high officials, not to follow this way because the Republic of Moldova declared its neutrality in its Constitution. The Romanian state has the obligation to respect the Constitution of Moldova; even though there are provisions we do not agree with, finding in this Constitution that the official language is Moldovan. We hope things will change. But, in terms of strategic approaches, Romania is limited to support Moldova’s integration in the EU. When Chisinau is to take another decision, we will support that process”, affirmed Basescu, quoted by Monitorul de Suceava<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In this context, the Romanian President has specified that Romania is encouraged by supporting the rapprochement process of Moldova to the European Union because “the neighboring country is considered to be “a story of success” within the Eastern Partnership, a cooperation framework offered by Brussels to its eastern neighbors”.<\/p>\n

“Regarding the neighborhood policy, Moldova remains a priority for us by providing traditional support to enter into the EU integration process. I can tell you that for EU the Republic of Moldova is a story of success of the Eastern Partnership. It is the most successful cooperation between EU and a country member of Eastern Partnership, which encourages us to maintain our position of unconditional support of Moldova’s EU integration process”, added Basescu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
