As recently announced, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay a visit to Moldova on August 22. She will meet then with the Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat and give a joint speech. Ms. Merkel will also have meetings with President Nicolae Timofti, as well as with the leaders of the Parliamentarian parties. The Chancellor is also expected to give a public speech, as well.<\/p>\n

The German official will come to Moldova together with a group of businessmen who will examine the opportunities to establish partnerships with their Moldovan fellows and later invest into this market. Vlad Filat previously said the Chancellor will also meet with the German investors in Moldova to discuss about their achievements and their challenges.<\/p>\n

This will be the first visit of a German Chancellor to Moldova since it became independent in 1991. The politicians and the experts see this event as a very positive one for Moldova. Vladimir Socor, a political analyst of East European Affairs for the Jamestown Foundation and its Eurasia Daily Monitor says that Angela Merkel is to date the leader with the highest authority in Europe.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with the Foreign Policy Association in Moldova, Mr. Socor said that Ms. Merkel’s word has a higher weight than the others’.<\/p>\n

“The attention paid [to Moldova] by the German Government is a very positive thing. The bilateral relations between Chisinau and Berlin can increase Germany’s support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. Berlin’s influence on the EU institutions from Brussels can lean over Moldova’s interest,” Vladimir Socor said.<\/p>\n

Some recent allegations said that Germany would have put pressure on Moldova to accept the federalization of the country, fact unwanted by the Moldovan side. The statements have been rejected by some officials. Even though nothing concret was discussed or publicly made, some expressed concern over the issue. Mr. Socor believes that such concerns are groundless.<\/p>\n

„Such a panic is completely unwarranted and wrong. Nobody puts pressure on the Republic of Moldova to accept the federalization. Not even Russia can make such pressures, although they want. Russia has no means to put such pressure on Moldova,” the political expert in Moldova’s foreign policy said. According to him, the federalization of the country would destroy the state of the Republic of Moldova, this being correctly understood by the Western diplomats.<\/p>\n

It is not clear yet if Angela Merkel and Vlad Filat will hold any talks over the conflict in Transnistria.
