German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Moldova on August 22. The information was given by Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat. According to him, Moldova will benefit from this visit by organizing some qualitative meetings.<\/p>\n

“It is a very important visit for the Republic of Moldova and we are going to benefit by having a visit full of achievements, not just talks,” Vlad Filat said.<\/p>\n

Although the agenda is not ready yet, the official promised to make it public by Friday.<\/p>\n

According to an analysis of Stratfor, Angela Merkel is the most popular politician in Germany and an influent person in Europe. The agency reports that Ms. Merkel’s greatest challenge for the next year will be to make sure that the Eurozone does not breakup and that the economic crisis does not spread even more.<\/p>\n

Germany expressed interest in the Moldova’s Transnistrian conflict resolution since a long time ago. Establishing a private environment for negotiation in a small, isolated German town this summer was an important step Germany has made in tackling the conflict.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Brush, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova said that the meeting demonstrated an improved climate for contract and co-operation across Nistru River to the benefit of the people living on both banks.<\/p>\n

Former EU envoy to Moldova Kalman Mizsei previously said that Germany’s involvement in the case is a positive thing.<\/p>\n

“Given the weight of Germany in the eyes of the Russians within Europe, this is positive. It is important that the German efforts remain embedded in the European foreign policy framework and I feel that this is the case,” Mr. Mizsei said in an interview. According to him, a stronger international involvement in the issue would have “deeper roots and would be healthier.”<\/p>\n

OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier believes that Germany had a significant role in supporting this conflict resolution.<\/p>\n

“Germany has given its sole contribution in confidence building measures. The Germans have played an important role in supporting this process. I think in initiatives of this kind, even though they can’t solve the issue, they can certainly raise the visibility, raise the political attention and facilitate the process,” the OSCE Secretary General said.<\/p>\n

It is yet unclear whether Angela Merkel and Vlad Filat will talk about Transnistria. What is known at the moment is that the German official will come to Moldova together with a group of businessmen who will examine the opportunities to establish partnerships with their Moldovan fellows and later invest into this market. Vlad Filat previously said the Chancellor will also meet with the German investors in Moldova to discuss about their achievements and their challenges.
