The High Representative of the European Union Catherine Ashton and Commissioner of Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstroem addressed a letter to Visa-free Europe Coalition stating about the success achieved by Moldova in terms of implementation of the Action Plan on Visa Liberalization.<\/p>\n

According to the EU officials, the Commission considers that Moldova has met all the benchmarks of the first phase and the assessment of the second phase can already be launched.<\/p>\n

“We have duly appreciated the efforts of the Moldovan authorities to adopt important and difficult pieces of legislation such as, lastly, the Law on Ensuring Equality or the Law on the National Anti-Corruption Centre. We realize as well that the implementation of all pieces of legislation adopted in the first phase of the Action Plan is a daunting task for the Republic of Moldova,” the EU officials said.<\/p>\n

After the implementation of the first phase of the Action Plan on Visa Liberalization, Moldova became one of the main beneficiaries of the Eastern Partnership Integration and Cooperation Programme.<\/p>\n

The implementation of the Law on Ensuring Equality was a matter of controversies in Moldova. The Moldovan Orthodox Church condemned the law and the lawmakers were repeatedly asked not to adopt the bill. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that enacting this law was part of the obligations which Moldova shouldered in front of the European Union.<\/p>\n

“In Moldova the church is a separated by the state. When you come to rule the country, you have to do what is important not for a certain group, but for the country, as a whole,” Premier Vlad Filat said.<\/p>\n
