The local administration of Balti – the second largest city of Moldova – approved today during the session of the City Council the extension of self-sufficiency of the municipality. They want to organize a popular referendum on the 9th of September to be able to extend their jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

The head of Timpul newspaper Constantin Tanase told Moldova.ORG that such a decision is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

“In this case the state has to prove it can defend its citizens against such methods of separation and destruction,” Constantin Tanase said.<\/p>\n

The decision was approved with a majority of votes mainly with the Communist Party members’ support. The City Council of Balti is ruled by a strong membership of Communists.<\/p>\n

The date of the referendum was wrongfully decided, said Iurie Ciocan, the president of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC). He stated that the City Council of Balti cannot establish the date of the referendum.<\/p>\n

“What they can do is to suggest a date to CEC. The decision to organize a referendum has to be legal and constitutional, while in this case we are seeing an irregularity,” Iurie Ciocan explained.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat said this is an out-of-law decision and asked to be cancelled. Vlad Filat requested the national Intelligence Service, the General Prosecution Court and the Ministry of Interior to investigate this case of law infringement.
