Impeached Romanian President Traian Basescu believes that the Republic of Moldova should be considered from a European perspective by joining the European Union. In an interview with “Romania Libera” newspaper Mr. Basescu said Moldova would reunify with Romania only within the European community.<\/p>\n

“Romania’s goal has to be the Republic of Moldova’s accession in the European Union,” Traian Basescu said.<\/p>\n

Romania – an EU member state since 2007 – is a strong supporter of Moldova’s European integration. They are making lobby at the European Parliament to strengthen the relations between Moldova and the European Union. Romania has a special relation with the Republic of Moldova due to their common historic roots.<\/p>\n

In 1918, in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution, Bessarabia as a whole joined Romania and was part of the sovereign state of Romania until 1940, when the latter surrendered it to the Soviet Union under the secret provisions of the secret Pact signed between Hitler and Stalin. In Russian practice, Bessarabia as a noun was officially pushed out of use after 1940, when the central part of its territory became a Soviet republic, under the name of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic.<\/p>\n

Bessarabia consisted of today’s Republic of Moldova, Northern Bucovina (today part of Ukraine) and Southern Bessarabia, Izmail town (also in Ukraine today). Bessarabia has resurfaced in use as a synonym for Moldova, after the country’s proclamation of independence in 1991. Bessarabian is sometimes used as a synonym for Moldovan.
